Every decade has it's most prolific anime series, and I believe that Haruhi will be one of the most important series for this decade. It has proven to me (a jaded, old-school anime fan) that the anime industry is not completely  flushing itself down the toilet. Kyoto Animation, has set the bar very high for other companies with this show, outstanding animation quality, coupled with a sensational plot that is presented to the audience masterfully (*IF* you watch it in the original air order, PLEASE DO), Haruhi offers any anime fan everything they could wish for.  If you are one to turn away from shows that are over-hyped, make an exception for Haruhi, it really is that good.
