I got into anime when I turned 13, (literally, the day I turned 13) although I had seen anime in many forms beforehand. No, I lie, I got into MANGA when I turned 13. Anime just came naturally after that. I had previously gotten into comic books during long, boring visits to a large department store that has since closed.
During middle school and high school, my manga obsession and habit of drawing during class garnered me a lot of teasing and I became an outcast. There was no anime club and no one in the school who shared my interests. (It was a small private school) During high school, however, I gained friends from other schools who shared my same interests.
