HI! Welcome to the new school year! Welcome back to all our returning
members and a big IRRASSHAI to our new freshmeats! I mean freshmen! Yes!
You're not edible at all..
Our schedule for the first meeting is really great; we worked hard on it,
so I hope you like it!
5:00: Fansub of the Week
5:25: Honey & Clover Episode 1: "... ... I just saw the moment when a
person falls in love for the first time. Oh boy... ..."
5:55 Vandred Episode 1: Boy Meets Girl
6:20 Kyou Kara Maoh Episode 27: Conrad's Arm
6:50 Mai HIME Episode 1: That is A Serious Matter for a Maiden
7:15 Princess Tutu Episode 1: Akt 01 - Kapitel des Eies: Ahiru and the
Prince ~ Der Nu_knacker: Blumenwalzer
7:40 Dinner Break
8:10 Heat Guy J Episode 1: Guy
8:35 Gankutsuou Episode 1: At the End of Our Travels, We Meet
9:05 Mermaid Forest Episode 1: A Mermaid Never Smiles
9:30 Speed Grapher Episode 1: The Corrupt City
After Hours: I don't want to know. (in other words, I hope you REALLY like
Urusei Yatsura and/or Cutie Honey)

Daniella here: Wow you guys! I remember last year I was just a little
freshman coming to the first club meeting (after not having one in high
school) and being so excited. And I'm STILL excited to come to club.
Honestly, I have found such great friends at Minna. I love you guys.

But enough about me! Let's hear more about me (your secretary if you don't
know me already and the other officers this year! We have 5 lovely ladies
and 1 guy. So I would expect a lot of fan girlish screaming.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/djmija/anime%20club/P1010800-1.jpg
First we have Annaliese, the most beautiful president in the world and
Graphic Arts major. Really, honestly, she's gorgeous. I found her picture
in an old Teen Vogue where they were dressing up these hot new models. She
may not look it but she's really a budding supermodel with a passion for
Detective Conan. She's also a part of one of the most awesome manga
circles ever to hit California, the 5 Pants Kicking Board Club. You'll see
her doodles on the doors of the silo every week. YES, she draws new ones
every single week and maintains a web comic at http://ensuing.comicgen.com
which I need to remember to start reading again.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/djmija/anime%20club/P1010803.jpg
Next we have Jenn, our vice president and resident Comp Sci major. I'm not
sure what she loves as obsessively as Annaliese loves Detective Conan, but
she loves it just as obsessively as Annaliese loves Detective Conan. (News
break: she apparently likes CLAMP's newer stuff a lot) Jenn's actually
really scary. I wouldn't cross her path, seriously. She could rip your
heart out through your eyeball! She's worse than the Bride!!! No, don't
let that squishy exterior fool you, my friends, she's a killing MACHINE
worse than Chuck Norris. If you ever hear her talking about orphans, she's
not talking coding, those are the kids whose parents she's killed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/djmija/anime%20club/P1010802.jpg
Then we have Audrey, the treasurer and a business major. At least I think
she's a business major. She may actually be some kind of accounting or
finance major but it has something to do with the business school. She's a
really awesome girl. I should know, I spent all of last year nearly
attached to her hip. She changes her hair color a lot and almost went bald
last year because she kind of over did it with the bleach. Girl didn't
even remember her original hair color! She works at Ralph's where you
should never shop because she'll poison everything you buy. No really, I
was there last week and the canned tuna I bought made me so sick.(Just
kidding of course, There's nothing wrong with Ralph's I think)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/djmija/venusdemilo.jpg Next there's
me, Daniella, the club secretary, photographer and journalism major. I'm
19, sexy and single. (Hint, hint.) I like movies, shoujo manga, and
singing while no one's listening. (aka karaoke) I speak about 4 languages
but I can't promise much in anything but English. Unless it's the dirty
words, I know ALL the dirty words. I will cook for whoever gives me back
massages. Freshmen, you might want to think about that one, you have no
idea how much campus dining sucks yet. Or maybe you do but you definitely
don't know how sick you are of it yet. I also should be maintaining my own
web comic at http://loverseden.comicgenesis.com , but I kind of left all
my inking pens at home  ::sob::

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/djmija/anime%20club/P1010804.jpg
Second to last is Holly, our librarian. I don't know what major she is
because she keeps changing it. At this rate she probably will never
graduate, but she's a sweet girl! And possibly more hyper than me! Which
says a lot. I lived with her sister last year in Trinity; really sweet
girls, both of them. Holly, how's your sister doing anyways? Tell her I
say hi! She's also the only officer that it's officially taken. (That I
know of anyways, met the boyfriend. We approve.) That's right; you don't
even get to try boys! You'll just have to take your pick from the sexier
remaining female officers!

Last, but certainly not least is Brian, the webmaster.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/djmija/anime%20club/Gunter025.jpg
I don't know much about Brian. Don't think I've talked to him much, but
DAMN HE'S HOT! I know for a fact that all the officers want to jump in his
pants. Too bad he's apparently ga- Just kidding, you shouldn't really
believe anything I say in this email. Let's hope that he does a good job
on the website and doesn't kill me for this!

My parting gift to you is a group photo of your highly attractive and very
loving officers taken at the WOW club fair or carnival or block party,
whatever you kids call it these days.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/djmija/anime%20club/P1010808.jpg

That's all for now! See you Saturday! (Sorry for the long winded post!)

Daniella

P.S. You will hear about a secret meeting called Minna no Manga, you will
go because it is awesome and you'll make tons of friends there and because
you secretly want to get into the Illuminati of Minna no Anime.

Minna no Manga, 10/05/06

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm, in 21-204. That's Engineering
West, I believe, but don't quote me on it.

Recommendation of the Week: Nazo no Murasame-kun by Itoumi Kio

Kunai is a regular high school student, at least that's what he'd like
people to think. In reality, he is the son of the top spy in Japan and is
well versed in ninja techniques. His father swears Kunai to secrecy, and
well, if anyone finds out about his abilities... his dad won't think twice
about offing him! Now Kunai must save lives and kick butt... without
getting seen!

Do you like Harry Potter? Do you like ninjas? Then read this series. Okay,
okay, there is no magic in it, but Kunai looks like Harry Potter. If Harry
Potter was a ninja. Anyway, the story is a lot of fun, the characters and
interesting and the art is pretty cool. Kunai is always using his... kunai
for his attacks and abilities and it's always fun to see what he'll use
them to do next. This series was a really good replacement after the
Naruto manga started getting boring. I don't want to step on anyone's
toes, but I think most people will be hard pressed to say the that series
has unfortunately been going downhill lately. No, no, I liked it a lot
when it was good (I've got the fanart and the Temari costume to prove
it... hell, I even have one of the headbands hanging off my monitor), but
now it just feels like Kishimoto is pulling stuff out of the air. But you
know, bad air. I hope it goes back to being cool soon. I'm not here to
talk about Naruto though, I'm here to talk about Nazo no Murasame-kun, so
back to that. Hmmmmm... It's cool, it's.... really cool.... and you should
read it.

Nazo no Murasame-kun is about 15 chapters long and runs in Weekly Shounen
Jump. The first volume is out in Japan. Scanlations are available from
Jump-Scanlations.

~Enter the Rant:

Not much to say, life has been pretty cool lately. I'm finally getting
around to watching Dokkoida, and I'm loving it. The menus on the DVDs are
probably the best I've ever seen.

D's rantings:

So my teachers are a little homework happy yes? Maybe I wasn't trying hard
enough last year, but I feel as if I am just that much more busy.
Maybe it's the extra time needed to walk to classes from Cerro Vista.
Maybe it's the blisters I got from walking to an interview in heels. (Ow
T_T)
Maybe it's the feature writing class that I don't have junior standing
for.
Maybe it's the column proposal I'm writing so I can get on the Mustang
Daily staff.
Maybe it's because I have to write this email! (Nah, I actually really
like writing this)

Anyways, I feel jam packed. But I'm really looking forward to Minna no
Manga, (my official weekend starter since I'm in my 4th quarter without
Friday classes) And to my weekend, which seems to be jam packed with
awesome. I must have a lot of jam around somewhere.

Also, I'm starting to get my webcomic, Eden, up off the ground so check it

Minna no Manga 10/12/06

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 21-204. All the cool kids come.

Recommendation of the Week: Nabari no Ou by Yuhki Kamatani

Ninjas in modern day Japan! Average student Miharu finds out one day that
he is the embodiment of the "Shinranbansho,"a secret art that is said to
be able to control the world. In a move that should surprise no one,
members of the ninja community that know of this hijitsu's power go after
Miharu. In order to protect himself from his own power and the ninjas
after him, he must learn the skill and abilities of the ninjas and ally
himself with the forces of good.

"Forces of good?" Sorry, that makes the series sound lame. Basically, he
teams up with a classmate, a crazy samurai girl, and his teacher. The
group has great chemistry, and even in the darkest situations one of them
will do something that makes me laugh. Well, almost. There are some really
dark times. The characters really are awesome and the story is a lot of
fun. This is probably my favorite ninja series. And the art! Oh, the art!
It's gorgeous. I was using Nabari no Ou wallpapers and displaying Nabari
no Ou pencil boards in my room way before I started reading the series.

Anywhooooo, check this series out, I doubt you'll be disappointed. There
are four volumes out in Japan. It runs monthly in GanGan Fantasy. The
first four chapters have been scanlated by Timcanpi.

~Enter Rant:

I'm not too fond of my art class. It's a lot of work and a lot of
pressure. but I'm too tired to complain about it today.

I hope to see everyone at five on Saturday to see our fansub. I'm so
excited to show it!! I'm so in love with this show it's driving me mad.
Mad I tell you! So please show up and check it out.

Bitch, Rant, Bitch:

Ok this might be a little personal for some of you. If you don't want to really hear me whine, I suggest not reading further. (except for the part about my online Mustang Daily column every Friday, check it out.) If you haven't heeded my warning and you don't like it, tell ME not someone else and don't say I didn't warn you

Let's start out with the fact that I have NO energy. There was someone I wanted to talk to at club last Saturday but I was feeling so exhausted that I just couldn't bring myself to do it. You know that's a bad thing when someone as out there as me cannot bring myself to talk to someone I really want to talk to. I know why I'm so tired. I have a lot on my plate. The column, my classes which all involve writing (save bowling which just makes writing painful) and this.

Then there's my friends. Buttloads of my friends are dating. I'm not. Seeing them make out in front of me is NOT fun because it makes me want a guy of my own. I'd be totally cool with it if they just stopped molesting each other in front of me. I would like someone to snuggle with, but I'm here for my Bachelors, not my M.R.S. degree. (For my friends, I love you and your snuggle buddies and all, but you could tone it down, please?)

The worst thing is I'm so shy around guys. I got dumped and rejected really badly before college and while I'm over the boy, I'm still afraid that any guy that I like will totally just reject me. I know none of you can tell because I'm so boisterous, but that's me trying not to be shy, I promise. It takes all my courage to ask a guy out let alone tell one that I like them.

I'm sorry the personal-ness of this piece. Don't worry about me. Sometimes you just got to bitch about things to feel better.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga 10/26/06

Uhhhhh, it looks like polylog1 (aka, the thing we go through to send e-mails) is still down,
so I'm just going ot post the weekly MnM e-mail here. Oh boy oh boy!
_________

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm, in 21-204.

~HALLOWEEN SCHEDULE:
(please remember these times are approximate!)
12-Anime starts in the silo
3-Trivia begins
6-Anime Eyes
7-Dinner (Karaoke starts!)
8-Anime Eyes Finals, Trivia Finals
9:30-AMVs, Pumpkin Carving judging (If you bring your carved pumpkin, talk to one of
the officers, we can store it for you until the judging)
10-Cosplay
10:30-Awards

There will be DDR all day! There will be Guilty Gear and there may be a GG tournament.
We'll probably have some controllers, but you may want to bring your own joystick. =D

~Recommendation of the Week: Pumpkin Scissors by Ryoutarou Iwanaga

You should have seen the first episode of this a few weeks back when we showed it for
Fansub O'. The anime follows the manga pretty well so far, so the story is the same.
Randal Orland, formally of the 901 Anti-Tank Troopers joins the war relief unit Pumpkin
Scissors three years after a devastating war. Orland blows tanks up. It's AWESOME.

As it usually goes, at least for me, I like the manga better than than anime. That's saying a
lot for this series because I adore the anime. The manga has a nice art and a steady pace.
The manga toys with my emotions. Sure, I love it when Orland turns on that crazy lantern
and goes all crazy, but it makes my heart ache to see the mental torture he goes through
because of it. These scenes are drawn in a very different style... Orland becomes a mass of
moving darkness, with only his eyes and scar glowing. It's quite powerful. The characters
are all delightful and I've come to love their little quirks. Orland with his slight slouch,
Alice with her extreme sense of justice, Oreld and his love of the ladies, Machs with his
timidness, Stekkin with her silly songs, and Mercury (the courier dog) with his random
biting of people's heads. If I had to say anything bad about this series, it would be two
little things. First, the art seems a little iffy at the beginning. Don't get me wrong, it's still
good, it's just a couple bits here and there look... off. Second, the color pages aren't great.
I'm not a fan of the colors chosen. But hey, if those two little things are the only bad
things...

There are five volumes of Pumpkin Scissors out in Japan. Volume six comes out in
December. No groups have released any scanlated chapters yet.

~Enter Rant:

I just turned in my first project in ART131. Finally. I think I spent about 50 hours on that
thing. @_@ Good thing the next one seems pretty simple.

I bought Jak 3 on Sunday. I'm really enjoying it, but I keep killing poor Jak. I don't mean to,
but the game is pretty difficult. I think by the end, I'm going to be really good at jumping
and driving. Dark Jak and Light Jak are really, really awesome. I want to draw them.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga 11/02/06

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm, in 21-204. We may move from room to room,
but we'll be in the general area. And obviously we STILL can't send out messages through
polylog1. Curses!

I hope everyone had a good time at the Halloween party! I know I did. ^_^

Ugh, I'm tired. I'd write something about some manga series, but I'm feeling pretty out of it
and am trying to get the full Halloween 2k6 Set on Gaia Online. Curse that site! I joined so I
could do something when I reached "the end of the internet," but now I am one of the
millions that just has to get that certain shirt or hat. Just 3k more gold before I can get my
Shadow Spirit! *shame*

Remember that we're in the little room in Fisher Science again this week for Minna no Anime!
We should get the bigger room in two weeks.

Hi guys! Sorry about the lack of my emails. Things have beenw weird
with polylog1, as you know, and I've been horridly busy. Still am
actually.

IMPORTANTE! This week we will be in FISCHER SCIENCE not the silo
thats building 33 room 287. DO NOT GO TO THE SILO WE WILL NOT BE
THERE!

5:00 Fansub O' Week
5:25 Honey and Clover Episode5. "... ... Yeah... ... I'm
home... ..." Thinking of mother back home
5:55 Vandred Episode 5. Sweet Temptation
6:20 Kyou Kara Maoh Episode 31. Land's End
6:50 Mai HIME Episode 5. Rain--. Tears.....
7:15 Princess Tutu Episode 5. Akt 05 - Kapitel des Eies: On the Eve
of the Fire Festival ~ Bilder einer Ausstellung: Die Katakomben
7:40 Dinner Break
8:10 Heat Guy J Episode 5. Doll
8:35 Gankutsuou Episode 5. Do you love your betrothed?
9:05 Mermaid Forest Episode 5. Mermaid's Forest (part two)
9:30 Speed Grapher Episode 5. Madam Diamond
After Hours: Don't know, don't care.

Rant:
Right now. I'm really hating writing. I mean its really cool that my
Media Law professor pushed back our midterm and term paper due date,
but that essentially gives me three days to write an 8 page profile
for my Feature Writing class (which I have to do massive research
about my subject for) and about two for my column. And how can I use
the weekend for wrting anything but studying for the midterm and
writing the term paper?

I'm one of those people who don't find writing to be hard. Whats
hard is writing so much in so little time thats stressful. So whats
a girl to do?

Go out.

I work well under pressure. The less time I have to do things, the
less I stress out and do other things to calm myself down. And of
course its not good for me, but hey it works.

Don't bother me until next Thursday, please for the love of Yaoi.

(Guess what I still can't log onto~)

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 21-204. Last week I played Pokémon and
read about moon bunnies.

~Recommendation of the Week: Over Time by Amano Youichi

"A lazy ass kind of a baseball player, Taro, and A very serious crazy baseball player,
Takami, that want to make it to the top. They cross paths on a bus that crashes. Takami
dies and Taro lives. Taro visits Takami's grave and sees Takami's ghost. His ghost tells
Taro to take him to the koshien and fulfill his dream." (from Jump-Scanlations)

Koshien is the stadium where the Nation high School Baseball Championships are played
every August, fyi.

This is a pretty awesome series. I'm a big baseball fan, so this series really appeals to me. I
love the art, it's got this awesome rough edge to it and the characters are very distinct.
The story-telling seems a little iffy at the beginning, but it really seems to be getting it
together. If you like sports series, this is one that your shouldn't miss!

The color spread from the first chapter makes a nifty wallpaper too! Please try to ignore
the wrinkles in it, I didn't notice them when I was cleaning it for wallpaper use! U_U;;

(OverTime.jpg=1.3 megs)
http://img459.imageshack.us/img459/1133/overtimecc6.jpg

The first six chapters are available for download from Jump-Scanlations, and the series
runs in Weekly Shounen Jump.

~Enter Rant:
I ran out of work for Viz a number of weeks ago. The translator and I must have been
working overtime or something, because suddenly we were just out of volumes to work
on. I asked my editor about the script and due dates for the next volume, and she just got
the from the higher-ups last week. You'll never guess when. ....August. The next volume is
due in late August, 2007. The translator's work isn't due until almost June, so I have a
good seven months of no work. Ouch. The extra time is very nice, but the lack of money is
not. I've put in a request for more work from them, so maybe, maaaayyybbbeee I'll get
something good to work on. Then again, I don't know if you can get much worse than my
current series (knock on wood). Please wish me luck!

Ah, don't you hate it when suddenly all your teachers have big assignments for you?
Papers, projects, reports.... ugh. I wonder if there is some schedule.... "5th week:
Midterms; 6th Week: More Midterms; 7th Week: Big Projects/Reports/Papers; 8th Week:
Laugh." Well, it could me worse!

There's nothing wrong with that but it kinda cuts into my relax time and my homework time and I just know they're going to be all up in my face about someone I went on a date with. >_< God having Jewish parents sucks….. but then again I don't think I'd want my real father (long story) instead of them. Whatever.

My week of hell was made even more hellish by my fish, Slim, dying last Friday. I had two and she was my favorite. I was bawling, I'm sure you all saw me be a little sulky at Anime club last week. That's pretty much why… T_T It still makes me sad. My poor little baby! I think my dad's going to get me a new fish, which will be great. My other fish, Wandsworth, is sulking too, so I think it'll be better for him to have a companion as well.

I know I whine in these emails a lot, but I haven't really been having the best life ever these past couple weeks so please bear with me. I'm not the type to remain all sad and go emo anyways. ^_^

Ooo there's a Del-ray manga sale o_o ::scampers away::

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga 11/16/06

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 5-10pm, in 21-204... but we'll probably move to 21-238
early on, since it is open and larger.

~Recommendation of the Week: ...

I'm fighting off some sort of sickness or something, and I can't think of anything I'd like to
recommend this week. Besides the Jak games. Oh baby, those games are really addicting. I
need to find some people who also love these games so I can fangirl to them and stop
bothering my roommates. ^_~

Rant:
::sighs:: It was so nice to have some time where nothing
particularly pressing was due. Sooo nice.

Anyways. I'm sure you've heard about Annaliese (and Jenn?) having
husbands and wives. Well I've found mine.

Everyone, meet Izark!
http://www.geocities.com/coolancelot/image/p21.jpg
Mmmm sekushi! So sexy, even Annaliese wants him. But no, he's mine.
He's even sexy as a monster!
http://www.geocities.com/coolancelot/image/p30.jpg

I met him a long time ago when I was teaching myself how to draw and
stealing pictures of the internet in order to do so. However this
was long long ago when I was still in middle school and the manga he
is in "From Far Away" was not yet published by Viz. I bought volume
one a long time ago, but since I was collecting other series and my
main manga source back at home kinda didn't stock it I didn't get a
chance to really get into it until now. Ooo I love it. I recommend
it to all of you. There's enough action to not make it a totally
sappy shoujo and enough romance to satisfy the shoujo fans. You
should read it. All of you. (Haha Annaliese, I have been into Izark
longer than you!)

And this is my wife: http://mana_shrine0.tripod.com/MM-Mana-Ice.jpg
Works out really well for me don't you think!! Ohohohohohohoho!

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga 11/30/06

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 21-204. But not really. You know we'll
actually be spending most of the time in 21-238.

~Recommendation of the Week: My Cat Loki by Bettina Kurkoski

From the back: "As a child, Ameya had always considered his cat more a sibling than a pet.
As the years went by, their bond grew ever tighter. But the cay his feline "brother" died
was the day Ameya withdrew from the world.

Several years later, Ameya encountrs a drenched stray cat in the park. Little does he know
what fate has in store for him..."

My Cat Loki is an adorable tale about a bond between a cat and his owner. It's a gorgeous
tale that will be enjoyed by any cat lover. I've enjoyed Bettina's art for a long time, so
finally getting my hands on MCL made my day. Her art is gorgeous, filled with beautiful
details and fun little quirks. It's obvious that she loves these characters she's created. I
love watching Ameya being a huge dork while caring for Loki and Loki's great expressions
when dealing with Ameya. Each chapter cover is an amazing pencil drawing that never
cease to wow me. My only complaint is that a lot seems to be lost between her pencil
drawings and ink-and-tone comic pages. Well, that and the fact that I'll be waiting a while
before the next volume is released!

~Enter Rant:
Hope everyone had a great break! I spent most of mine watching my family have fun on
my brother's Wii and playing Phoenix Wright 2: Justice for All. The Wii is an amazing
gaming system! I can't wait to get one (and get Twilight Princess, but that goes without
saying). Phoenix Wright 2 is way too much fun. My sister, who was mocking me for playing
it the first half of the break ended up begging me to let her play it the second!
Unfortunately, with all the important game-playing, I didn't get any school work done!
Now I'm busy busy busy getting ready to turn in all sorts of papers and projects!

Rant:
Oh man. My thanksgiving was a little crazy. Internet went down. Got
kidnapped and taken over the border by my parents to look at condos.
As if my parents didn't own enough property already… we might be
getting a condo in Rosarito Beach. Not that I really mind….I mean I
inherit all of that when they die. But that's the kind of stuff that
doesn't get me scholarships and stuff. (other than property my
family isn't really wealthy at all) And I'm the one who gets yelled
at for it. As if having too much money placed in investments is MY
fault. Other than that, looking at houses is just boring as fuck.

Luckily, I did get bribed. I got manga from my dad and A LOT of
clothes from my mom. Yay for clothes. Seriously. There's nothing I
like more than shopping and getting a bunch of cute new clothes.
Well nothing except shopping and getting a bunch of awesome manga,
but those are really separate (but not necessarily equal) categories
for me. I did a lot of shopping over the break. I got cds, a dvd
(Tower Records is going out of business, I suggest if there's one
near you, go shopping the sales are so good.) … there was a sale at
my favorite comic book shop so I got shitloads of manga (That's in
addition to the bribery manga) the clothes… converse high tops with
FISHES on them. So cute…
My fishes mean so much to me. They're my babies. So I just had to
get the shoes.

That was really the highlight of my holiday. (Ha! How pathetic!) I'm
not very fond of my mothers. My dad is fine… but my mom and my
stepmom… well I wish I could change their personalities. Yeah I have
two sets of parents. It's a long story.

Next weekend I was supposed to go to my step-brother's wedding in
Florida, but because its right before finals, my mom won't let me.
I'm kinda bummed out about not getting to go, but I realized that I
would miss Minna no Anime, the quarterly movie, and Tsurugi's so now
I don't feel so bummed I guess.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 12/07/06

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm, in 21-238.

~Recommendation of the Week: Blue Dragon by Takano Tsuneo and Obata Takeshi

An Obata-drawn series (Death Note, Hikaru no Go, and Ayatsuri Sakon) based off of a
game with Toriyama art (DBZ, etc), in which a world is attacked by the "kage," creatures
who consume others by living in thier shadows. Raru is a boy who can control a dragon
which lives in his shadow. Led by his teacher, Mio, he protects the kingdom.

...Actually, I'm not too sure about the plot. The first chapter came out last week and my
Japanese is shoddy at best. But I can truthfully say that the art is really, really good. Obata
has a chance to draw lots of motion, where as DN, HnG, and AS involved more sitting and
mind games than running and fighting.

There are currently no scanlations for Blue Dragon, but you can download the raws from
Raw-Manga. The series runs in Weekly Shounen Jump.

~Enter Rant:

Ugh, dead week! I have so much work to do still! Plus, I just started playing Twilight
Princess (which is absolutely amazingly fantastic). Gahhh, it's hard balancing work and fun.
Luckily, we just have a week and a half more, then most of us get a nice three week break!

Brave Story this week! *dances*

I'll be in Vietnam so I guess I won't be so bored….
But I miss Minna no Anime during the breaks… you guys keep me

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 01/11/07 ~New Room~

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, in building 20, room 129. Hear that? 20-129.
Engineering East, the Electrical Engineering building. It's a new room! Yaaaaay~

~Recommendation of the Week: Guardian Dog by Akira Shirakawa and Shouko Fukaki

Guardian Dog is the story of a high school boy, Gengo, whose body is invaded by a six-
eyed water creature (he invades through his heart... keep your minds clean, people). This
gives Gengo pretty cool water-controlling abilities and six eyes. Luckily for Gengo, the
extra eyes are usually hidden. Unfortunately for Gengo, they are usually hidden. They
seem to come back at very bad times and give himself away to creatures that want to
attack the original six-eyed creature. He eventually takes in a woman who was sent to kill
him, helps out his plant-creature teacher, and it watched over by a strange man who
insists on being called "aniki." The story starts as a "on no, strange creatures are trying to
take over" story and evolves into a tale of trust, friendship, and identity. This is one of the
few manga series where the inside artwork looks much better than the cover, at least in
my opinion. This artist has launched himself towards the top of a short list of my favorite
mangaka. I highly recommend this series to any manga fan.

Guardian Dog is four volumes long and ran in Comic Rush. Unfortunately, no scanlations
are available at this time.

~Enter Rant:

Ahhh, break is over. I hope it went well for everyone.

I really hope everyone enjoyed Brave Story last quarter! I ended up taking the movie home
and showing to everyone I could tie down for two hours. Ahh, that movie makes me so
happy. I didn't get as much work done on my Wataru costume as I had hoped, but I got a
lot of materials together, so I guess it's a start. *coughcough shameless plug* If you're on
livejournal and liked the movie, you should join the community! http://

Rant:
I had a really interesting break. I don't mean that in a specifically good or bad way because
it was BOTH.
First, a family friend whose child I babysat over the summer was killed in a car accident in
New Zealand.
Then I went to Singapore (on my way to my Vietnam) had high tea at the famous Raffles
(yummy, I suggest if if you're ever there) and promptly twisted my ankle.
Then I went to Hanoi and promptly got very sick. I skipped the next day, I was told I didn't
miss much.
Otherwise Vietnam was fun. Lots of interesting things (like Ho Chi Minh's embalmed body)
lots of good shopping (I now have more purses and scarves than any normal fan girl will
ever have in her lifetime) not so much good eating (I'm a picky eater and beef and chicken
aren't part of Vietnam's normal menu) but a LOT of good French pastries. (Random
Daniella Fact: I'm part-Austrian, Austrians are notoriously sweet-toothed. Then again,
anyone who lived with my mother and/or grandmother would be.)
Everything was fine until I came home (alone, my mother and the rest of her group went
onto Cambodia)

I found that I had no ride home. EVERYONE I knew in the LA, OC, and San Diego area was
going home on Saturday, (I had to pick up my parents very late on Saturday) I couldn't
take the train (a) they were sold out b) they wouldn't let me take my fish on)
Like I predicted, my dad and step-mom took me home. BUT not without my stepmom
having a bloody FIT about doing so. SHE wanted to go to Rosarito Beach again, but noooo I
just had to ruin things for her.

So when I got to school I was relieved, but not for long.
First, my room door wouldn't open because the entire lock shifted 90 degrees to the left.
Had to wait hours. Then the next day I lost my key (it was in my back pocket the whole
time) AND my computer broke. Tuesday was alright. Wednesday, I got sick and my
homework wouldn't print out. (LUCKILY my professor was forgiving.) Today was alright
too, I'm feeling better.

Anyways, I'm working in the package center in Sequoia. If you live on campus, expect to
see me there on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Its nice. I get 7.50 to do ten times less
than last quarter. Mwahahaha.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 01/18/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm, in 20-129.

~Recommendation of the Week: Kurogane by Kei Toume

"Avenging his father's murder is a matter of honor for the young samurai Jintetsu. But it
turns out that the killer is a corrupt government official -- and now the powers that be are
determined to hunt Jintetsu down like an animal. There's only one problem: Jintetsu is
dead.

Torn to pieces by a pack of dogs, the young samurai Jintetsu's ravaged body has been
found by Genkichi, outcast and master inventor. Genkichi gives the dead boy a new,
indestructible steel body and a talking sword-just what he'll need to face down the gang
that's terrorizing his hometown and the mobster who ordered his father's hit. But what
about Otsuki, the beautiful girl he left behind? Steel armor is defense against any sword,
but it can't save Jintetsu from the pain in his heart." -From Del Rey's Kurogane page

Kurogane is a wonderfully interesting story taking the possible to the edge of impossible.
The stories are packed with emotion, character development, and action, making it a great
series for just about everyone. I really enjoy the series, but what keeps me rereading the
volumes is the awesome artwork. It's drawn in a loose, almost sketchy style. Occasionally
the lines become a little too unruly and busy and things are hard to make out, but most of
the time the style adds to the depth of the series and gives it a wonderful slightly grungy
feel.

Volumes 1-3 have been released by Del Rey, and there are at least five volumes available
in Japanese from Open KC. A thiry-page preview is available here:

http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/manga/kurogane/

Sorry about the mix up with KKM. I'm not sure how that happened but its totally my fault.
Anyways, all fixed, no biggie.

Immediately after I came home from Minna no Anime last week, I realized I was sick. I had
a cold all weekend. I just know one of you guys gave me your germs. But now I'm better so
no worries.

Other than the fact that some of my favorite manga will be ending this month, so far
things are good. A little bit heavy on the homework front but thats what spending hours
freezing in the package center are for!

I'm trying to sell my Copic markers right now. If any of you are interested, I'll be selling
them for half of their retail price. Or I'm willing to barter for something(s) or some kind of

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 01/25/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 20-129.

~Recommendation of the Week: Emma by Kaoru Mori

Emma is the story of a young upper-class man who falls in love with a maid and the
troubles in creating and maintaining a relationship in Victorian times.

I do think that's my shortest summary ever. Sweet. Emma is a adorably cute romance. I
usually shy away from series like this, but I could not help but love this one. The setting is
wonderful, the characters are wonderful... I didn't care much for the art at first, but it grew
on me.

It's a bit early and my brain is still warming up, so I'll end it there.

CMX has licensed Emma and the first volume is out in stores everywhere.

~Enter Rant:

I started downloading a couple series that have been out for a while: Kikaider and Demon
Lord Dante. Dante is pretty interesting in a messed-up way, and Kikaider is a lot better
than what I remembered (and I remember it being pretty cool). I'm looking forward to
seeing more of both of them.

T-shirt designs due this week. I'm looking forward to seeing them!

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 02/01/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 20-129. We'll be discussing Open House plans
this week!

I'm not really feeling up for writing a "review" right now (if you can call what I write a review),
so no long, boring recommendation this week. I will say that I've been catching up with 666
Satan (O-Parts Hunter in the US), and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. If you're feeling bored with
Naruto, check this series out. It's done by the brother of the Naruto artist, so the style will
feel nice and familiar.

Enter Rant:

Ahhh, Color Theory. It's really interesting to spend three or fours hours every couple days
painting swatches. At least in the art class I took last quarter you could see something
coming together. This quarter? No. After so many hours, I'm left with dozens and dozens of
little color swatches and a think coat of paint all over my arms. Joyous, really. However, there
is one upside to this! The tasks of mixing paints and painting swatches is pretty simple (just
amazingly time consuming), so I can watch anime while I work. Last week I finished Orphen:
Revenge. This week I'm planning on finishing Dai Guard. Woo!

On another note, I joined weight watchers because to be honest, its damn hard to eat
healthy and I need to lose weight for my heart. I'd like to have my next surgery in TEN
years when the technology could possibly evolve and be better rather than... mmm 2-3
years. (I'm really scared of surgery) Plus, you know, it'll give me a better chance of living
through the damn thing!

Ummmmmm I've come to realize, I barely know the words to any songs in English. They're
all in Japanese, Spanish or Hebrew.

How Scary.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 02/08/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 20-129. We'll be talking more about Open
House this week!

I wanted to start complaing/glorifying/talking about my opinions on manga publishing
companies this week. I'd love to get feedback! If you disagree with me, please tell me!

Industry Watch: Tokyopop

Tokyopop, formally known as Mixx, is one of today's biggest english-language manga
publishers. They have brought series such as Sailor Moon, Saiyuki, Cowboy Bebop, and
Mars to us. Many American artists have been able to get their start as professional comic
creators through their Rising Stars of Manga program. Recently, they expanded their
company by creating their "Blu" imprint which focuses on boys' love comics.

Ah, Tokyopop. While I appreciate all the titles they bring out and the great variety of the
titles they license, there are many things I dislike about their company. First off, being a
graphic communication major, it really bothers me that the paper they use is pretty low
quality. Second, their print jobs are generally low quality. With this I refer to the quality of
the image on the paper and how well the page fits/is centered/trimmed/etc. For example,
I enjoy the series "Threads of Time" by Mi Young Noh. I would start buying the volumes,
but many pages in the first volumes are trimmed incorrectly. This makes the text run off
the page. It's not hard to figure out what it being said, but it is a cause of annoyance. And,
what actually bothers me the most about this problem is that when I asked if it would be
reprinted because it greatly detracts from the quality of the book, I was basically told that I
made it up. Granted, it was one guy in a large company, but it doesn't take much to make
someone turn off of an entire company.

Third, I hate it when a company licenses a title but does not finish releasing it or takes an
extremely long time releasing it with no stated reason. With a company that has so many
titles, it's not shocking that some would be left in the dust, but that doesn't make it okay.
Hey Tokyopop, why the 18 month wait for Qwan 4?

Fourth, BAD DESIGN. Some of those logos and covers are SO poorly designed, it hurts my
eyes... and I'm not a good designer.

Fifth, page quality. It seems like that pages that were in color when published in
magazines are often fuzzy in Tokyopop books. It's not a huge problem, but it's annoying
to look at.

I do have to compliment Tokyopop for bringing out the Twelve Kingdoms and Kino no
Tabi books. Granted, they're not the first company to bring out books like this, but they
did a pretty good job with the first volume of Kino. Unfortunately, my fourth complaint
comes in again with this. They took the beautiful picture of the Kino off the cover and
switched it with a vector image of one of the chapter pictures. Wait, chapter pictures?
Sorry, they scaled those down and repeated, because having six tiny copies of an
illustration is obviously better than having it full-sized. ...what genius thought that up?

Sorry Tokyopop, until you improve the general quality of your books, I will not recommend
then to anyone.

Enter Rant:

rant rant rant.

I'm sorry if I was being strange last week. Stranger than usual, I mean. I was really tired
from working on that flag all day. Because of our water being shut off the past two days,
my attitude has not improved much, if at all... until today. Jenn and I finally watched the
end of Host Club, which was very, very awesome, and I finally got off my butt and ordered
my Wataru figure.

...the fact that there was no note saying that they were going to turn off our water again
yesterday didn't hurt either. ^_~

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 02/22/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 20-129.

Industry Watch: CMX

CMX, a branch of DC Comics, is one of the "bad guys" of the manga industry. It's not
hard to see why. The company insists it releases manga the right way. No really, it's on
their website. "...And it's manga — 100% the way the original Japanese creators want you
to see it. In English!"

Really now, CMX? What about Tenjou Tenge? Did Oh Great want you to cut up his work to
get rid of some of the panty shots and sex scenes? What about the changes in Ragnarok
(Sword of the Dark Ones)? I don't think the mangaka would take the removal of Leroy's
manbits lightly. Poor Leroy.

Now, I wouldn't have a big problem with this if that was really the whole problem. But it's
not. Fans have come forth with ideas to keep series untouched but safe from younger
audiences in stores, but CMX seems to reject them. Why? These ideas have helped other
companies keep their mature manga away from younger readers.

The design of their logos and the redesign they do on a number of covers is pretty ugly.
And what's with changing cover designs halfway through a series? At least their print
quality is generally pretty good.

It makes me sad that a company would be so stubborn on censorship, while other
companies have been slowly stopping censorship on their titles. After hearing company
workers practically spit on the opinions of fans, I decided to stop buying their books. It
may not effect the company at all, but in my opinion, it's important to take a stand against
stupid censorship. It really hurts me too... I really like a lot of the titles they have. I guess
I'll just have to read them in stores!

Enter Rant:

Rant part: so I want to stay in SLO over the summer and take classes and work and stuff.
It'll help me graduate on-time and I won't have to spend time with the evil bitch that is my
mother. (she's a nice lady if you don't have to LIVE with her)

But my parents won't let me.

I'm not losing this one, sorry Mommy.

Music Review: The Dresden Dolls-self-titled debut.
This CD has been out for awhile and the Dolls have since put out other LPs, but this
one is the best! For those of you who don't know the Dolls, they're a two-person punk-
cabaret act.

	Keyboardist/Vocalist Amanda's lyrics are very fucked-up-girl-angry-at-the-world,
but she does it with such wonderful turn of phrase that they're unique. And she covers
everything from ex-boyfriends, (Good Day, The Jeep Song, Truce) sucky parents and the
stuff you inherit inadvertently from them, (Half-Jack) cutting, (Bad Habit) and rape.(Slide)
You listen knowing you've experienced one or two of the thing she sings about.

Of course the beats are good too, but lets face it, I know nothing about music. Just
that its either good or bad in my humble opinion.

Movie Review: Music & Lyrics
Ok, yes its a chick flick. Now get over that because its not your normal chick flick. Its
not The Notebook which can emasculate any grown man into tears, but it actually has
good valid REASON behind it! Drew Barrymore's character is depressed because her old
mentor wrote a book portraying her as a (fictional) horrible person. Hugh Grant's character
really an 80's era pop musician who can't write songs without his old partner and is totally
high on his own has-been stardom and he revels in it. They get into fights for GOOD
REASONS. And guess what, the music in it is totally catchy! I'm not the one for movie
soundtracks, but I want to buy this music soundtrack! Besides, Drew Barrymore and Hugh
Grant are totally cute. (respectively as well as together.)

Hope you've had a good week!

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 03/01/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 20-129.

Ahh, I'm getting increasingly later with these! Well, I was planning to talk about Viz
tonight, but New York Comic Con happened last weekend with a slew of new licenses, so I
thought I'd say a couple words about a few of them.

Del Rey:Pumpkin Scissors
Yes, that's right, Del Rey has the Pumpkin Scissors manga. If you enjoy the anime, I think
you'll love the manga. The art is a little shakey at first, but it gets better as the series goes
on.

Yen Press:Zombie-Loan
A serries by the same creators of Rozen Maiden and Dears, Z-L is a story about two boys
who die but want to regain their lives. To do so, they pay off the loans on their lives by
killing other (evil) zombies. Good action and art with just enough comedy to keep you
smiling all the way through.

Yen Press: Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna
A teenaged detective tries to solve cases surrounding the Blade Children in order to locate
his missing older brother. A fun story whose anime counterpart has been in the states for
a while. If you like mysteries, you'll enjoy Sprial.

Viz Media: Muhyo and Rosie's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation
This is a story that seems to be generally overlooked. Muhyo and Rosie work together to
defeat demons that plague humankind. Muhyo, who has very little skill, works hard to
prove his worth. The regular art really doesn't catch me very well, but the color pages are
spectaular. I've been enjoying this series for a short while with no one to talk to about it,
so I'm happy that I'll finally have some fellow fans!

Viz Media: Pretty Face
A rough fighter is in a traffic accident and the only thing the doctor repairing him has to
go on is the picture of his crush that was found in his pocket. Now he has to pretend to be
his love's twin sister! This series mixes fanservice with many sweet moments to create a
very enjoyable read.

Viz Media: Millenium Snow (aka A Thousand Years of Snow)
Bisco Hattori's earlier work. You should know her from such series as... Host Club... and...
Host Club. Millenium Snow is about a sickly girl who is rescued from the brink of death by
a strange vampire and his bat side-kick. The story is utterly adorable and all-around fun
that will probably be enjoyed by anyone who loves Host Club.

Viz Media: Togari.
TOGARI! TOGARI! TOGARI! OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG TOGARI.

Ok, I'm calm(er). Togari is the amazingly awesome story of Tobe, a killer from the early
Tokugawa shogunate who gets a chance to escape hell by destroying 108 sins(Toga) back
on earth. He must do this with the sword Togari. But the world is not the same as it was
when he was first alive! He must learn how to live in the modern world and collect these
sins while not commiting any of his own. The art in this series is completely awesome, the
artist draws some spectacular brush paintings for it and the expressions are amazing. I'm
really excited that Viz is bringing Togari to the states, it really deserves more attention
that it currently gets.

Ayatsuri Sakon:
HAHAHAHHAHAHA, no, it wasn't licensed. ....alas... but I did tell some people I would
upload the manga version of the arc we skipped, so just follow this link:
http://ensuing.livejournal.com/159760.html

Rant:
So I'm really excited about Togari. Really really excited. I can finally show off the version of
Togari (the sword, not the manga) my dad and I made, and people might get it. Well, until
then, it's still a cool sword. =3

Manga review: Red River
Ok so its shojo. WHO CARES?
Its actually about a Japanese girl somehow coming up in bronze age Mesopotamia. Once
she gets there she is promptly chased by guards and makes out with a prince. Said prince
protects her because his step-mother is the one who actually brought her to Mesopotamia
in order to chop off the girl's head in order to make her own son the king. LOVELY. What
winds up happening is the girl somehow becomes a reincarnation of Ishtar (if only to
protect her from certain death) and prince and girl have crazy adventures. (she becomes
his concubine sorta)
IN BRONZE AGE MESOPOTAMIA. ITS GOT FIGHTING AND WAR AND ROMANCE.
Anyways, its totally cool, check it out. If you want to borrow it from me I've got up to
volume 13 (and expanding)
Oh yeah... why is the title of this week's Princess Tutu say Crime and Punishment when the
German title is Carmen of Aragon? (Thats an opera you guys and if you've seen Phantom
of the Opera, you know that thats where ballet got it's start.)

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 03/08/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm, in 20-129.

Ramble, ramble, ramble~

Industry Watch: Viz Media
Viz Media was one of the earliest manga publishers in the US. They are owned by three of
Japan's largest publishers/creators/licensors of anime and manga: Shueisha, Shogakukan,
and ShoPro Japan. They currently bring some of the most popular manga series to
American readers, like Naruto, Bleach, and Fullmetal Alchemist.

I used to hate Viz. I really did. They made stupid changes and censored random things and
the anime they released was HORRIBLE. My goal was to work for them and work towards
helping make the company that people would be happy to buy from. Unfortunately for me,
by the time I did have a job there, they were already an excellent company.

I say unfortunately, but I was really amazed and impressed at the care that goes into
working on some of these series. When an editor gets a series, chances are they'll really
get into the series. I assisted the editor for Rurouni Kenshin on a project and every time
he'd come by to see how it was going he'd tell me all about this or that character or show
me his latest figure. It was really fun. I have no right to say that other companies don't
have people like this, but I have no idea if they do either.

I do have my complaints about Viz. I don't agree with a lot of the censorship, I think a
number of the logos are quite ugly, and I am still disgusted by the quality of the anime
they put out.

As for censorship... I hate it, but I now understand it. When CMX censors something like
Air Gear to avoid the Mature rating, that's a stupid move. But when you have a series that
is aimed at young children and something needs to be censored, it's stupid to wrap the
volume in plastic and slap a mature rating on it instead of censoring it. And if you don't
censor it, the mommy so-and-so is likely to complain to everyone who will listen. Take
Konjiki no Gash Bell (Zatch Bell) for example. When Gash enters the series, he is not
wearing anything. It's not particularly offensive, but he is naked. So what did Viz do? Put
pants on him. Not the best thing to do, but it's not an edit that changes the story, so it
works. Not all censorship is to get rid of possibly offensive situations, There is also
corporate censorship where corporate logos are removed. But there is hope! Viz has
changed their censorship policy, so there should be much, much less censorship from now
on.

I believe Viz is one of the leaders in the US manga industry. They bring out quality titles
with quality printing and great care is taken to make sure things turn out right (although
mistakes do occasionally slip through the cracks). Their pricing is the best in the industry;
they have many different imprints at different prices. For example, I believe Shounen Jump
and Shounen Jump Advanced books at $8, at least two dollars less expensive than most of
the other series being published by other companies.

Viz has recently started to branch out from manga and anime to produce other types of
merchandise that fit with their manga titles, like novels, character books, and art books. If
you've seen the character or art books, you know how high quality those releases have
been.

Ahhhh, to sum this long thing up, Viz Media has some problems but in general a very
good company that prints high-quality books.

This may have been biased. >_>;;

Manga: Flower of Life by Fumi Yoshinaga

Yoshinaga-sensei is usually a boys-love mangaka, but this time she went into a totally
different direction. Ok so there's like one teacher (its a gakuen (school) manga) but that
ends quite hysterically and not in a way you'd expect it to!

The plot is basically this guy named Harutaro entering school (a month late) after battling
with leukimia. He quickly finds a niche for himself, etc etc. Its really a school life manga,
but Yoshinaga-sensei has this wonderful way of making it very interesting and engrossing.
Plus she's a great artist.

Overall, its an upbeat, feel good manga. Its great.

Song: Survivalism by Nine Inch Nails

Ok I LOVE NIN. I really do. I don't like older men much and I'm not too into industrial
music THAT much, but Trent Reznor is gorgeous AND a genius! Unfortunately their last
album (With_Teeth) wasn't that great.

They're next disc, Year Zero, isn't out yet, but many of the songs have already been
leaked. (much to my delight)
And much to my delight (again) Survivalism is MUCH BETTER than anything off of
With_Teeth. It just sounds like the NIN everyone knows and loves but with that twist that
makes them sooo good to listen to.
If you're not familiar with much of NIN's work or you're just starting to listen to them,
whats so great about NIN is Reznor's very structured songs with a pop background (he still
keeps it metal, of course) and his racy lyrics. If you haven't heard Closer then you
obviously don't know what I mean.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 03/15/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 20-129.

Industry Check: Go Comi

Let's end the quarter on a high note!

Go Comi is one of the newcomers in the American manga industry, having been in the
industry for less than two years. They began with four titles; Crossroad, Cantarella, Tenshi
Ja Nai, and one of my personal favorites, Her Majesty's Dog. They now have eight series
(After School Nightmare, Night of the Beasts, Train + Train, and Black Sun Silver Moon),
and are slowly expanding their comic lines.

Truthfully, I can't find anything that bugs me about this company. They constantly impress
me. They listen to their consumers, they have pretty nice logos, they don't censor (as far
as I know)... In my opinion, they produce some really good books.

When I was still an intern, I happened to come across one of their blog entries about
lettering. (http://www.gocomi.com/blog/index.php?ID=120) I was so amazed at the
thought they put into this. I've never seen a manga publisher explain why they do
something like this before! I wish all manga publishers would put this much thought into
their series.

Their blog is really interesting and I recommend it to anyone who is bored at work or
wants to learn a little bit more about the industry. I really liked when they talked about
getting their books printed. ( http://www.gocomi.com/blog/index.php?ID=136 ) If you
want to stay sane, don't look at their Comiket posts... they make me mad with jealousy!

Hmm. Well, I guess there really isn't much else to say. Go Comi is my favorite manga
publisher and I highly recommend their books!

Enter Rant:

I'm still blown away about everyone's kindness last Saturday! Thanks again everyone! <3

I finished the body pages for a the volume of a new series I'm lettering, so I've been
checking out a lot of new series. I can't wait to talk about them! If you have the time, I
highly recommend Gentou Club, Tegamibachi (Letterbee), Gi-Rei, and D-Live. I'll try to talk
about them later.

If you've been looking for the next volume of series ____ for ages but haven't seen it, it
may have been cancelled. MangaCast has posted a list of probably cancelled titles. You
can see it here: http://community.livejournal.com/mangacast/486726.html
That list makes me very, very sad.

But this time its short! Anyways Tsurugi's on Sunday and then... FINALS! Good luck you
guys.

Rant/Review:
I'm really pissed that the police escort van didn't let us in. Thats just not cool. There was
room for all of us too. But no.. on-campus people have to walk.
I've been having some heart trouble lately. (I have a heart condition, long story, lets get
over it.) When I breathe in it hurts. I'm pretty sure its just stress but its been bothering me
especially when I've been walking back up to Cerro. I was really tired last night and it was
like the straw on the camel's back you know? Curse you police escort van!! We'd be in and
out of your car so damn quick but you can't give us a bloody ride?? Fuckin' douchebags.

Manga Review: The Gentleman's Alliance Cross by Arina Tanemura

Now I'm a fan of Tanemura-sensei but this manga is soooo fast paced. Thank god for her
explainations.... At first its like huh why is this person important? but it usually works
itself out... But that all comes a little TOO late you know? I honestly don't know how I feel
about this manga. Its certainly interesting, but its lacking in many areas. If I had written it
Gentleman's Alliance would have been way different. I would recommend it. Plus you get a
bad ass poster.

Manga Review 2: Princess Princess

Most people are like: this is a yaoi/shonen ai manga. Its not. Quite the opposite. The worst
that happens is that these guys are forced to crossdress to lift the spirits of those poor
souls in their all-boys school. Its actually quite amusing.
Lets put it this way: its more of a pretty-guys-being-forced-into-crazy-situations manga.
Anyways, if you're not afraid of your masculinity (or you have one) I'd totally check it out.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga, 04/05/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm, in 20-129.... usually! But for the next couple
weeks, we will be at Murray Station #79 working on Open House materials! You are free to
go and use the usual MnM room to hang out though.

So, boat construction at our apartment this week. Please bring any materials you think we
could use. We have a couple box cutters, four rolls of duct tape, and a little bit of
cardboard, but that's it. We obviously can't make our usual Campus Market run, but there
are lots of other places to get food within walking distance of our apartment. If you want
to bring something to heat up here, that's fine too.

It is highly likely Audrey will have T-shirts during this time! If you ordered one and would
like it then, bring your money! $13 for members, $15 for non-members.

If you're cosplaying for Open House, please come in or bring your costume to club
Saturday. We will be taking pictures for our promotional material. If your character has a
scar/tattoo/brith mark that you can't have on Saturday, we'll probably be able to
photoshop it in. ...at least I hope so, because I won't have my scar or stubble on Saturday!
=3

If you have any questions, just post them here or e-mail me (ensuing@<removed>.com). It's
probably better to post them here. I check this more often.

Hope school is going well for everyone. Hope you had a great break!

Music Review: Muse- Black Holes and Revelations
I really like Muse. Honestly I do. But this album disappoints me.
Where are all the awesome vocals? The funky techno-piano? Why
couldn't I stop thinking how much better their last album was? I
still like some of the songs, but the album as a whole… not so much.

Eternally tired,

Hey guys, it's chicken practice prep night! That's right, our favorite MnM meeting of the year!
It'll be at the regular time, 6-10pm at the Apartment of Awesome (that's Murray Station #79).
We'll be spending out evening practicing chicken prep for Saturday, making Awesome Sauce,
and putting some of the finishing touches on the boat.

If you have them, please bring cutting boards and knives! Yes, this is the one time we let you
guys play with knives. However, attacking anything but chicken is prohibited.

We'll also need some extra rice cookers for Saturday. If you can let us use yours for that day,
we'd really appreciate it!

Hope to see you all tomorrow!

[MNAMembers] Minna no Open House Saturday April 21, 2007

There is no Minna no Anime! Its Open House!! (So come to the booth and
be our kitchen minions!)

On a sadder note: one of my fish died today. Oddly enough it wasn't
the fish that is dying from kidney failure. So both of my fish could
be dead soon. So if you see me crying, just give me a hug and a
tissue, it'll cheer me up massively.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga 04/26/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm in 21-129. Now we can start discussing con
stuffs!

Wow. We're back. Short post, as I'm in the middle of a very important discussion about book
titles for 5pkbc's Bleach Doujin. Winning titles right now are "Clorox," "Supernova Disaster,"
"Shinigami Showdown," and my personal favorite, "OBITO'S CRUSHED DREAMS." Pay no
attention that the last title has nothing to do with Bleach at all. The doujin will be awesome
though. Actually, it will be beyond awesome. (/self-pimping)

Once upon a time, I wrote reviews of books and publishers. I'll start doing that again next
week, I've just been lazy, er, um, too busy.

I hope everyone stopped by last Saturday to see our AMAZING BOAT. It was seriously
awesome. We'll show lots of pictures this week at MnA.

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm, in 20-129.

Industry Check:
This week let's look at at a quickly improving company, Dr. Master. When DM started
putting out books, I was highly disappointed at the quality of the book. Low density ink
coverage and cheap paper made it feel like I was holding a bound newspaper more than a
book. With such ugly books, I couldn't bring myself to read them, even though they were
putting out titles I was interested in. So, for a long time, I ignored all Dr. Master releases.

A few weeks ago I happened to notice that some company was brining out Kia Asamiya's
new series, "Junk." I was pretty weary after seeing the DM logo on the side, but I thought
I'd give it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised to see a high-quality embossed cover that
mimicked the original book's dust jacket. The entire cover was exactly like the Japanese
version, except with in english and with a few small additional logos. The paper inside,
while still not all that great, was leaps and bounds better than the newsprint they had been
using before.

After seeing Junk, I decided to check out a few other DM titles, just to check if Junk had
gotten some kind of special treatment. I was happy to see that other books are being
printed better on better paper. They may not be the best, but I know from now on, I won't
be just passing up DM books any more.

Review: 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa

I've been a fan of Naoki Urasawa's work for a while. I respected Monster, although I've seen
and read very little. I love Master Keaton dearly. Pluto has been recommended to me. But I
never thought I'd find myself so in love with one of his works I had heard to little about.

20th Century Boys is about a group of friends who must save the world by from an
unknown person, a mysterious figure who goes by the name "Friend." Now, this might not
be such a bad thing if "Friend" hadn't decided the world would end on December 31st,
2000. Now Kenji, an average liquor store worker must gather his childhood pals in order
to stop the strange "Friend."

It doesn't sound like much, does it? If curiousity hadn't grabbed hold of me, I would have
never even picked it up. I am very happy I am a curious person. This isn't a story about a
group of people who try to save the world. It's a story of friends, family, mystery, politics,
prophecies, and music. This may just be the most amazing thing I have ever read. Not
many things have sparked so many questions, so many wild theories, and so many fits of
excitement. This is fangirl level ten.

Urasawa's artwork is not like your typical shounen style, but then again, this is not your
typical series. Each character is distinctly different, but everyone is completely believable.
He doesn't need to give them wacky hairstyles or strange markings. The story jumps
between time periods constantly, but it's not hard to tell the younger versions of all the
characters from the older versions. Color pages have a nice light touch to them that bring
a good feeling to the story. It's hard to explain. How Urasawa does things is beyond me.
All I can say is... the man is a god.

I'm a pretty emotional person. I cry easily, I have a short temper, and I'm often excited. So
I really shouldn't have been surprised when I found myself crying while reading 20th
Century Boys. But... I wasn't crying because I was sad or happy, it was because I was so
amazed and so anxious to know what would happen. I've never experienced anything like
that before.

My incoherent rambling doesn't do a lick of justice for this series, but I hope someone will
be curious enough to give it a chance. I doubt you'll be disappointed. This is a series that
comes with nothing and gives you everything.

20th Century Boys is 22 volumes long. It's sequel, 21st Century Boys, is currently running
and looks like it will be two or three volumes long. You can download almost all of the
series form StopTazmo.com, but Viz has the rights to it and will be bringing it out after
they finish releasing Monster at the request of Urasawa.

Enter Rant:
Whoa. Life is really busy. I took the time to read Pluto, which is also by Urasawa, this
afternoon, and maaaaan... you'll be hearing about that one soon too. So very good.

Oh, and sorry to those who read my LiveJournal and this... I really just copied and pasted it
from there with a few small changes.

Webcomic review: Last Blood by Bobby Crosby and Owen Gieni

Zombies and Vampires. DOOOOOOOOOOOD!
Yes I get excited over shit like this! I'm not a total shojo nerd!!
(Ok yes I am.. and this comic has a drop of romance, so I am quite
satisfied.)
Its pretty new so there aren't too many pages, but I got hooked
instantly. The stories pretty interesting. The creators got pretty
creative with creating their post-zombie apocalyptic world! I'm going
through the process of creating a world with my current comic project
so I really appreciate a good story background. The art is sketchy as
hell, but I don't mind. (Even though I prefer cleaner lines.) If you
can pull off sketchy, then I will worship you.

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga 05/31/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10 in 21-129.

This week we have lots to do! Current officers and new officers don't forget about our
meeting! Haruhi dance members, we have our usual practice! Raven Dancers, we need to
chat about our costumes! Plus, Magic: The Gathering games, YGO games, great manga,
awesome company, and Fanime videos!

Industry Update:

Well, at the Funimation panel this week I didn't see any MnA members, and I know there
are a lot of fans out there, so I thought I'd pass on the information we were given at the
panel.

One Piece:
-Funi's version will air starting at episode 144. Sanji's lolipop will be back (smoking
cigarettes is not allowed on tv), but cigars and pipes will be back in the show.
-New dub cast! It sounds like regular Funi voice actors are crawling over each other to get
parts on One Piece. Everyone wants to be in it. =D
-Actual contact will not be shown in the broadcast version. You'll see a swing and hear the
impact, but not see it hit.
-Sooo, some editing, but not as much as 4Kids. But...
-The broadcast version will never see a DVD release.
-Uncut versions will be sets of 13 episodes for about $50 (suggested retail price). They
will be released every 2-3 months.
-It is unknown whether they will start releasing sets with ep 144 or ep 1, but all eps will
get released.
-There will be a big One Piece event at AX. No details were given, but we were told that we
would know right as we came in.

Beck:
-There were something like 600 legal issues in this show, mainly band and product logos.
-Some logos had to be removed, some were kept in. Each case had different
circumstances.
-The box will be released in July and looks like a mini amp. It will come with a set of vinyl
stickers that can be placed and re-placed all over.
-Each volume will come with a different guitar pick

Mushishi:
-There will be short releases, one disc every 6-8 weeks.

General:
-You can now get episodes of some Funi shows from iTunes for $1.99 an episode or
$34.99 a season. Unfortunately, they are dub only.
-The unskippable previews will stay pretty much unskippable. You can skip them by
hitting the title button on your remote... if you have one.

Enter Rant:

Fanime was a blast, even with my costume issues. Why did the costume I work the most on
turn out the worst? In other news, did you know that Daisaku's (Giant Robo) costume looks
just like Light's (Death Note), but with short-shorts? It didn't help that I couldn't style my
wig right, so it looked like Light's hair... >_>;;

Congrats to Andy for winning a Judges' Award for his AMV! Congrats again to David for
making it to the finals with his amv and to Jesse for his awesome performance at the
masquerade!

I have way too many costumes planned for next year... a good number of group cosplays
I'm excited for. Anyone want to join a Cyborg 009, Team Magma (Pokémon), or Soul Eater
cosplay group? =D

I just pulled an all nighter. Well mostly. I can't actually stay up
all night long unless I'm constantly eating and I didn't want to
actually do that so I just took naps every few hours or so.

I think I got about 5 hours of sleep?
This is going to sound prissy, but I can't survive on that little
sleep because I've got those loads of health problems, anemia being
one of them. So I either have to go back to sleep every few hours or
start stuffing my face (which really isn't a substitute for sleep) to
avoid fainting.

The problem is I have work from 12-1, a final project presentation
from 1-4, and then work again from 4-6.

Just wait, I'm going to be doing something at the presentation and
I'm going to collapse to the floor.
I will happen, I promise.
People are going to freak out.

God, my body sucks!! (And I don't mean my figure.)

Love,
Daniella

[MNAMembers] Minna no Manga 06/07/07

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays, 6-10pm. You know. In the place we always meet. This
will be our last meeting of the quarter.

Well, I'm not feeling up to writing much tonight, so I'll just suggest some series for
summer reading.

Summer Reading:
Brave Story- You guys should know the basic plot of this one. The manga (being released
by Tokyopop) is quite a bit different, definitely worth a look. The novel is coming out from
Viz in July- you should definitely pick it up. It'll be over 800 pages, hardcover, and with a
really cool cover.

His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano)- Tokyopop has been bringing this out for a while,
so there's lots to read. It's definitely one of my favorite shoujo titles.

Mars- Ahhh, my first real shoujo series. It's not your average fluffy love story, it's a very
realistic tale of two very different people who fall in love and the realistic struggles they go
through in their relationship. No faries or genies to help them out. ^_~ The mangaka is
amazing, her art inspires me to improve my own. If you like shoujo, you can't go wrong
with Mars.

Yu-Gi-Oh GX- Yes, I know. It's Yu-Gi-Oh. But you should know that I do love YGO, if just
for it's mindless fun factor. The manga may not be as "epic" as the original, but the
original did not have young super-adorable Juudai/Jaden. Truthfully not a spectacular
series, but it is mindless fun. And summer is all about being mindless. =3

Zatch Bell!- This series revolves around demon children and their bookkeepers who are
involved in a battle to become the demon king. Awesome characters, awesome story,
absolutely hilarious... It's really great. Unfortunately, this title is often overlooked. Give it
some love guys, it deserves it. Plus, this is where Chichi wo Moge came from.

Enter Rant:

One of the big perks about working for Viz is that occasionally, veeeerrrry occasionally, I
get to see things before they are released to the public. And let me tell you, that cover
looks SO AWESOME in real life. I'm really, really excited. You obviously can't see me right
now, but I'm waving my hands up and down like I do whenever I get excited.

Sorry if this post doesn't make sense at parts, I'm not completely awake right now. Come
on, body, it's only 10pm!!
