[Ramblings]
It's so exciting to see the first week of Minna no Anime start! Working all summer to get this lined up is tiresome, buuuttt... omg. I am amazed at how much anime I've watched over the summer just because of club! What have you watched over the summer? Hopefully we'll pull in some good new series for Fan Sub O'.

This summer I was working as an office assistant for a NPO. One of my tasks was to go through Standard-of-Living papers of various East African beneficiaries. Do you have a bed? mattress? blankets? How many times a week do you have meat? Are your children in school? I suppose it's not helpful to get depressed over such things, but sometimes I reflect upon it, especially when I'm off in my own little busy nerd world. "What... does it all... mean?" Or...... something. [/Back to your regularly scheduled programming]

[Ramblings]
I'd like to rant today about my Forest Surveying class. Don't get me wrong, that stuff is useful. However, the majority of the lab today was purely looking for small orange pegs. In tall grass. In a cal-poly cow pasture. With both fresh aaaand dried out pies. Luckily, I wasn't the one to accidentally step ankle deep in cow water. After that, theeeen we had to do measurements. I think the department is a little whack. I even have a saturday lab on the day of our Halloween party. Suuuuck!

There's also a girl in my Chem class who thinks it's a good idea to ask ~me~ for help. I don't know about you, but I don't trust me. Dangerous science will be had!

Oh, you should all start playing GROW games. Essentially, they are addicting. I admit to marathoning several hours in one day. I find it really interesting to see how the elements interact and I find these games innovative in the casual-game world. You can find many of them at http://www.eyezmaze.com/ They have other kinds of games as well, but I believe they got famous for GROW games.

Minna no Manga: October 10th, 2008

Minna no Manga meets Thursdays from 6-10pm in building 3-113.

MnM is our social time on Thursday nights, where we bring manga (comics), laptops, games, and pretty much do whatever!

Manga-ka you should know: Mitsukazu Mihara.
Mitsukazu Mihara is an influential Japanese illustrator credited with helping shape the GothLoli look through her work in the "Gothic & Lolita Bible", as well as in other subsequent manga (notably her acclaimed "DOLL" series). In 1994, she won the first "Feel Young New Face Manga Awards" Judges’ Special Prize with her short work, "The Children Who Don’t Need Rubbers."

Series: Doll
DOLLs are human-like androids manufactured by the SG Corporation. A DOLL can fulfill many varied needs and serve any number of purposes, including personal assistant, secretary, cook, maid, laborer, companion, lover... and, of course, status symbol. Ichiro is a remodeller whose grandfather was president of the SG Corporation. Ichiro demonstrated his genius level I.Q. even as a child... which led to constant abuse at the hands of Ichiro's step-mother and her children. Ichiro's only relief came from a domestic DOLL that belonged to his family... and the DOLL showed Ichiro more warmth and kindness than any of his relatives.
Why you should read Doll:
Doll is BY NO MEANS related to Chobits (It actually came before the chobits manga). Doll, as the description of Mihara suggests, has a full fledged gothic lolita style. However, don't let that fool you, Doll is a very dramatic, psycological and veeery dark manga. Indeed though, this manga is ultimately about compassion, companionship, and society roles. Each chapter is a new story about people, and each tale changes your perspective about Dolls and Human Nature. You may not think it at first, but this series can be a real tear jerker, but not so much in a sappy was as in a beautiful way. I highly recommend this series.

The Embalmer
Shinjyurou Mamiya is an embalmer, a profession seen as ‘unclean’ in Japan. Shinjyurou has accepted the life of an outcast amongst most people, to him, it is a job and nothing more. He has gained an exceptional understanding of death and its consequences, as well as what it means to live.
Why you should read The Embalmer:
If the cyborg-human theme tires you out (but seriously, you should read Doll anyways), The Embalmer follows a similarly introspective style. You will definitely learn more about death, and maybe even see it a little differently. As always, Mihara's art is just plain beautiful and meticulous.

Other works:

  1. Beautiful People
  2. R.I.P. - Requiem in Phonybrian
  3. Haunted House
  4. IC In A Sunflower

Currently only in Japanese

  • Happy Family volumes 1-3 & 'extra'
  • Dokuhime (毒姫) "Poison Princess" volumes 1-2
  • tamashii no futago (たましいのふたご) "The Twin Souls"

[Other Things]
I really wish that the whether started getting cooler. You'd expect such things, being autumn and all, but alas. Unfortunately, I'm a sweatshirt kinda girl, which tends to make things difficult. Come to think of it, last year at Halloween, it was also ridiculously hot. At least it wasn't raining?

Also, I'd like to plug the Minna no Forum, at http://minnanoanime.invisionplus.net It's a good way to get in touch with other members, and talk about our shows (or whatever). It's especially useful if you want to express your opinions in a more written fashion. I know it's easier for me to respond comments or questions if it's nice and neat like that. Currently, Brandon is our top poster, but I'm sure one of you could beat him if you tried! (no hard feelings, bro!)

Suprisingly, I don't have anything to rant and raaaage about this time around, except maybe the weather. It's supposed to get cooler over the weekend and hot on Monday and Tuesday? When will it end?

Instead of beating around the bush, I'll give you guys a link to more Flash games. Why waste away a couple minutes of your time when I can devour hours? (hey, that rhymes! Sorta...)

[Manga-That's-Topping-The-List-Today]
I thought I'd try something different and check out myanimelist.com. Members add anime/manga they've read and rate it. Here are the top rated manga (according to their algorithm)

1) Berserk - Gatts, known as the Black Swordsman, seeks sanctuary from the demonic forces that persue him and his woman, and also vengeance against the man who branded him as an unholy sacrifice. Aided only by his titanic strength, skill and sword, Gatts must struggle against his bleak destiny, all the while fighting with a rage that might strip him of his humanity. Berserk is a dark and brooding story of outrageous swordplay and ominous fate, in the theme of Shakespeare's MacBeth.

2) Monster - When a Doctor makes the highly controversial decision to save a boy's life over the mayor's, it leads to the loss of almost everything he holds dear. His fiance, his career, his social standing. The only thing he keeps is his own feeling of self worth, knowing that he did the right thing in saving the boy, who came in first. Yet even that is threatened when he begins to learn that nothing is as it originally appeared. A trail of bloodshed pointing to the seemingly innocent child leaves him questioning even his beliefs. Whether, in the end, all lives are ever truly equal.

3) 20th Century Boys - Kenji and his friends start to notice a series of odd occurences related to their childhood. A mysterious cult-leader named "friend" is out to destroy the world, and it has something to do with Kenji's childhood memories.

4) Nausikaa of the Valley of the Wind - A millennium has passed since "Seven Days of Fire," an apocalyptic war that almost wiped out human civilization. Since then, the earth is covered with an ever-growing "Sea of Corruption," a vast forest of fungi that secretes poisonous miasma and invasive spores, along with large and deadly insects inhabit within.

5) Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou - Set in a post-apocalyptic Japan of the near future where the sea level has risen and flooded much of the coastal areas and Mt. Fuji has erupted within living memory. The population has been considerably reduced and political and technological institutions have broken-down. Local communities have become nations and telephone and television no longer exist (although coffee vending machines and streetlights stubbornly continue to work). There are strange new animals and plants (like flying fish and glowing streetlight trees). The remaining people have adopted a slower-paced, simpler way of life and rely more on each other. Along with the human population are some intelligent, humanoid robots. One of the robots, a female named Alpha, runs a cafe by the same name in the country outside of what remains of Yokohama. With her trusty motorscooter and her camera she travels around the area making friends with the humans and robots, having new experiences and observing the passage of time. (I've never heard of this before, and I will inevitably check it out now)

Have you read any of these? According to myanimelist.com, you should. If so, do you agree with this list?

Considering he's a #1 bestselling author, you'd think that Dean Koontz's latest creation, In Odd We Trust, would be a smashing hit. I've heard a lot about it because of that title, but haven't heard anyone's opinion of it yet. And so, here's a review which speaks the opposite of what you'd expect from this author:

Deb Aoki's review of: In Odd We Trust
Put together a bestselling author and an experienced global manga creator and you have the ingredients for a graphic novel with crossover appeal for manga fans and young adult novel readers. But even the best recipes are only as good as its cook and its execution. In Odd We Trust is good idea that's served up as a flavorless, half-baked dish that's unappetizing for any audience.

Odd and friends are drawn in a very odd style, with jutting chins and generic, mannequin-like expressions. For a suspense story, there's very little mystery or surprises here; from its awkward beginning to its anticlimactic end.

Pros
   * A game attempt at translating a bestselling author's stories into graphic novel format
   * Has a few entertaining flashes of unexpected humor and satire

Cons
   * A mystery story that doesn't offer much suspense or many surprises
   * Stiff, clunky artwork, with characters that look more like dazed mannequins than people
   * Numerous missed opportunities to develop characters beyond just one-dimensional caricatures
   * Famous ghosts like Elvis and Lyndon Johnson bring very little to their cameos
   * Aussie artist Chan's rendition of a "quiet desert town" looks inappropriately Midwestern

MnHalloween is over guys! We put so much effort into it and I'm glad things went as smoothly as they did. With the consideration that we were all new officers, it was scary to think about at first. I think it was really neat that the members who have moved on from Cal Poly got to participate this time around!

Manga Review: Himitsu (Top Secret) Ch 1, by Shimizu Reiko
Himitsu is currently only out in Japan, but I think you'll see why I chose to review it.

Himitsu is a psychological mystery manga, with a Sci-Fi twist. In our scenario, computer chips are implanted into everyone's brains to fight off infectious disease. There is one side effect: This chip also records everything you've seen, for your entire life. This is an essential element to unlocking the key to murder crimes. It's like Minority Report, without the time travel/pre-cog ethics mess. The first chapter (which brings you to why I've chosen this for today) includes the current, fictional president, who is known to be the most honest president in history and many consider him to be a near saint (sound familiar?). This chapter delves into the idea of "the man behind the mask", in other words, what the media doesn't see about such figureheads. As a whole, Himitsu demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of perspective and point of view.

There is some rocky dialogue, which is likely an issue of translation. Aside from that, the art is clean and captures the emotion very well. I recommend this to anyone who likes crime-scene themes or exploration of the human mind and heart.

Other works by Shimizu Reiko: 22XX, Magic, Milky Way, Papillon, Tsuki no Ko, Wild Cats, Kaguya Hime, Ryuu no Nemeru Hoshi

[Rantings]
Did you know that SLO Transit adopted a double decker bus? It was working routes 4 & 5. It's so freaking pimp, I hope they keep it. At 8am (especially on Fridays), these routes are overflowing and gah it makes me uncomfortable. If for no other reason, dude, it's a double decker bus.

Also, since when was Cal Poly football 3rd in the nation? You'd think there'd be more dancing in the street? I will blame it on the economy... for now. The only reason I know about it is because of the upcoming parking lulz.

By the way, Fanime pre-reg is well underway. At the beginning of this month the price went up to 50$. If you're planning on attending, pre-reg for a cheaper price! More info about dates/location at fanime.com.

Spring 2009

Minna no Manga: April 1st, 2009

Hello everyone! I hope your break was delightfully springy.

Due to Open House, many active MnMers are working hard at booth construction elsewhere. However, we do officially have a MnM room starting this Thursday. Minna no Manga meets Thursdays from 6-10pm in building 10-227 (Same bldg as last quarter, different room). MnM is our social time on Thursday nights.

Fanime Club Room Interest Due Saturday!:
Coming to Fanime 2009 (May 22-25th, San Jose, fanime.com), and interested in rooming with fellow club-mates? There is a paper interest-list, but you can also do it on our forum.

OPEN HOUSE ZOMG!
As our largest source of income, open house is a big deal for MnA. When things go well there, we can afford shiny things (like DVDs) for the benefit of the club. As members of this nearly-free organization, it would be super fantastic if you could lend a hand. Even if you can only attend a few things, help is appreciated.

9 easy ways you can help-
 1) Complete the booth construction. This Sunday at noon, we ask that members ride up to Shannon's house and help put together/paint the booth. Contact Shannon or any of the officers for rides/details.
 2) "Practice Chicken Prep", on Thurs April 16th. You should know what I'm referring to.
 3) Lend out cooking supplies. We are making chicken skewers and rice, so we will need to borrow BBQ grills, rice cookers, and assorted kitchen tools.
 4) Setup the booth on campus Friday/Saturday morning. This is when all the elements will come together, so many hands will make this go smoothly.
 5) Cooking and Sales. If you know your way around a skewer, grill, rice-cooker, or don't, we need hands to move the assembly along. If you are good at handling money/arithmetic/not-dropping-things, you can help at the window as well.
 6) Information and Greeting. If you would like to chat-up new-members/parents, you can help by answering questions and saying a little about the club. Hanging around the booth is easy!
 7) Dressing the part. If you want to help during Open House, it's nice to show a "club uniform". You may wear our Club T-Shirts (which you should definitely buy anyways), Gurren-Dan T-shirts (Contact Erica), or you can cosplay from Gurren Lagann.
 8) Buy our foods. Tasty, tasty foods. You're salivating right now, I can tell.
 9) Help deconstruct the booth. You can't beat the god-like feeling of destroying hard work, and then playing ice hockey.

WE HAVE T-SHIRTS! YAY!

It's 2 days until Open House, so this week is dedicated to Booth prep. If you are able, please help in any way, big or small.

TODAY: We need people to go up to Shannon's place to bring the booth itself down from Atascadero. If you are at 4pm, please contact Andy or Erica to let them know you are available. Meet at Erica's apartment or Team Rocket. They are leaving promptly at 4, so make sure you come on time. If you have a car of your own, we can give you directions to the location.

ALSO TODAY: Chicken Prep. Right after Booth-getting is Chicken Prep at 6pm at Erica's Church. Contact Erica if you need directions/rides.

If you can come to both tasks, you are the best person ever and deserve a cookie.

OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO:
1) Lend out cooking supplies. We are making chicken skewers and rice, so we will need to borrow BBQ grills, rice cookers, coolers and assorted kitchen tools.
2) Setup the booth on campus Friday/Saturday morning. This is when all the elements will come together, so many hands will make this go smoothly.
3) Cooking and Sales. If you know your way around a skewer, grill, rice-cooker, or don't, we need hands to move the assembly along. If you are good at handling money/arithmetic/not-dropping-things, you can help at the window as well.

7) Help deconstruct the booth. You can't beat the god-like feeling of destroying hard work, and then playing ice hockey.

Thank you everyone for your hard work. It's this sort of team work that keeps things going, so we really appreciate it.

Thank you!
